ESMAP, set up in 1983 in response to the global energy price shocks of the previous decade, marks its 30thanniversary this year. In that time, ESMAP has moved from being a small program focused on giving targeted advice to oil-importing countries to one of the World Bank Group’s most established trust funds, mandated with helping developing countries find solutions to a wide range of energy challenges. “ESMAP has grown along with the complexity of the energy sector,” said Rohit Khanna, ESMAP Program Manager.

An ESMAP-led international effort to expand geothermal power generation in developing countries was launched in Reykjavík, Iceland on March 6 by World Bank Managing Director Sri Mulyani Indrawati. The Global Geothermal Development Plan (GGDP) will bring together donors to help finance exploratory drilling, reduce the risks of early stage geothermal development and build a pipeline of commercially viable projects. “Geothermal energy could be a triple win for developing countries: clean, reliable, locally produced power. And once it is up and running, it is cheap and virtually endless,” said Sri Mulyani at the Iceland Geothermal Conference.

For the past two years, an ESMAP-supported technical assistance program has provide strategic advice to the Philippines on integrating renewable energy resources into national grids and expanding electricity access to underserved populations.

The recognition that women and their dependent children make up the majority of those living in poverty has brought gender equality to the forefront of the global development agenda, including in energy programs. ESMAP recently produced a Briefing Note and a series of online resources and guidance tools to help policymakers and project designers improve gender equity in the energy sector.
