A Strategic Vision for the Tunisian Energy Sector: Reflecting on Priority Issues
(Available in French only)
The Jasmin revolution of 2011 laid the groundwork for a new Tunisia. Among the issues at the core of the revolution was a recognition that an energy transformation is needed if the country is to continue to thrive. The transformation of the energy sector would need to play a leading role to meet the needs of post-revolution citizens, namely the sustainable improvement of the quality of life, creating jobs, the development of less favored regions and involvement and the social acceptability of new energy infrastructure projects.
This study focused on four priority themes and determinants for selecting the optimal path to such an energy transformation: (a) how is Tunisia’s energy demand best met by 2030? (b) how can regional integration be harnessed for the benefit of Tunisia? (c) what institutional reforms can help render the energy sector more sustainable? and (d) what socio-economic benefits can be expected in the future? The study supported a broad stakeholder discussion among Tunisia’s civil society in line with the Government’s vision that the development of a strategic direction in the energy sector had to be based on a highly participatory approach.
