Harnessing the "hidden fuel" of energy efficiency offers many opportunities to help rapidly growing cities achieve energy security, energy savings, and reduce costs and emissions. Integrating energy efficiency can also contribute to improving municipal services and increasing competitiveness, making cities more inclusive and sustainable. To help cities tap this potential, ESMAP has released a new series of guidance notes to help city leaders integrate energy efficiency options into their planning, as well as design and implement successful programs. The notes focus on six key topics: procurement, financing, buildings, transport, assessments, and urban planning.

An ESMAP-supported pilot tool launched by the World Bank Group will help developing countries further their sustainable energy goals by providing a snapshot of the policy and regulatory framework needed for private investment in the sector. Readiness for Investment in Sustainable Energy (RISE) provides a reference point for countries to see what will be required for the expansion of energy access, renewable energy and energy efficiency
