The Global Geothermal Development Plan (GGDP) continues to mobilize and channel international concessional financing towards expanding geothermal energy in developing countries. Led by ESMAP, the GGDP focuses on initial test drilling, the riskiest phase of geothermal development. Most recently, the Clean Technology Fund (CTF - part of the Climate Investment Funds) approved a total of $48 million in a financing package to support geothermal risk mitigation in Chile, to be carried out by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). This support is from the new window approved by CTF towards which donors pledged $115 million in October and are now considering expanding further. Read more about geothermal development and the GGDP in this Climate Investment Fund Knowledge Note, as well as in the latest issue of the IFC's Handshake magazine.

With 8.5 million motorized vehicles and 100-kilometer-long traffic jams, São Paulo is the sixth most congested city on earth. In 2011, the Bank Group launched pilot "Voluntary Corporate Mobility" programs in São Paulo and Mexico City to ease traffic congestion in these two mega-cities, while also helping business and municipal organizations identify and adopt new ways of getting people to and from work. Despite the two cities’ differences, common lessons emerged from the pilot programs, which were implemented by the World Bank's Latin America and the Caribbean Transport Unit with support from ESMAP.

ESMAP held its first regional training workshop on renewable energy for World Bank Group staff and partners in Pattaya, Thailand, on April 23-25, 2014. The event, organized with the South Asia and East Asia and the Pacific regions of the World Bank and the IFC, brought together over 100 field experts from the World Bank Group, as well as other professionals from the wider energy community. The training covered wind, solar PV, concentrated solar power, and small hydro, as well as cross-cutting modules on grid integration, financing, and policy and regulatory incentives. The event also involved South-South exchange sessions that provided an opportunity for smaller group discussions and exchange of experiences and lessons across projects and countries.
