ESMAPâs Energy Efficient Cities Initiative Attains Early Gains in 2010

The Energy Efficient Cities Initiative (EECI) is taking giant strides in the New Year, 2010. The program, launched in October 2008, is largely underway to achieve its objective of promoting energy-efficient programs and planning among developing country cities. Recent achievements include:

EECI commissioned a Rapid Assessment Framework (RAF), to help cities diagnose their energy use and recommend measures to improve their efficiency. Learn more.
It launched a Public Procurement of Energy Efficiency Services: Lessons from International Experience report that outlines energy saving solutions in the public sector. A Web story following the book launch event is now available.
EECI took action to implement and operationalize outcomes of the recently concluded global brainstorming session, to mainstream Building Energy Efficiency Codes in developing countries in partnership with the World Bank’s Urban Development Unit. Learn more.
Provided direct technical assistance (TA) to help cities identify opportunities for energy efficiency in buildings, water systems, public procurement, and sustainable transport. EECI is providing technical assistance alongside grants from Cities Alliance. In addition, the first TA to Quezon City, Philippines is now under implementation to promote energy efficient buildings. A similar intervention is being considered for Zarqa Municipality in Jordan.
Lastly, EECI just launched its annual Good Practice Awards to recognize cities that have promoted energy efficiency in sustainable and innovative ways. Learn more.
A new case study of energy efficiency in public buildings in Kiev (Ukraine) is now available in EECI’s project database. So far, EECI has cases studies from India, South Africa, Colombia, China and Portland, United States of America. EECI’s project database allows cities around the world to share experiences of urban energy efficiency.
