Energy Efficient Cities
Cities are an important engine for economic growth and socioeconomic development. They are key to the global effort to address climate change. By 2030, almost 5 billion people – about 60 percent of the world’s population – will live in cities, leading to massive requirements for energy to power growth, expand basic infrastructure, and help meet growing demand for energy services (such as lighting, heating and cooling). The increase in urbanization is projected to overwhelmingly (about 90%) occur in developing countries. Energy efficiency can offer practical and cost effective solutions to budget constrained governments and citizens to meet their energy needs without sacrificing their development priorities.
Significant economic energy efficiency potential remains untapped, and renewed and sustained efforts are needed to address barriers (financing, incentives, information, capacity and market) in order to scale up energy efficiency and avoid locking-in developing country populations and governments into inefficient, polluting and expensive development that will further strain many fragile energy supply systems.
ESMAP’s Energy Efficient Cities supports cities move to an energy efficient and sustainable pathway through the establishment of enabling environments, the development of workable and scalable implementation models, and the elaboration of investment-ready energy efficiency projects. Read more.
