ESMAP’s Renewable Energy Initiative Registers Progress in Helping Countries Diversify Their Energy Supply Mix
April 19 2010
ESMAP’s Renewable Energy Market Transformation Initiative (REMTI) is making progress in assisting countries diversify their energy supply mix and scale up the deployment of renewable energy technologies –concentrated solar power, geothermal, and wind hydro power, said Cindy Suh, REMTI Program Team Leader at ESMAP’s Knowledge Exchange Forum in Washington, DC on March 25, 2010.  The event was attended by a cross section of development partners, policy makers, practitioners and energy specialists.

REMTI’s Program Team Leader provided an overview of REMTI in terms of other mutlilaterial funds and facilities, and outlined key areas of ESMAP  engagement  in scaling up deployment of grid-tied renewable energy technologies around the world .   Beatriz Arizu de Jablonski, World Bank’s Senior Energy Specialist, together with Mr. Vince Perez, the Philippines’ Former Minister  of Energy and current Vice Chair of the  National Renewable Energy Board, illustrated REMTI’s support to the Phillipines to achieve the the government’s RE diversification and development goals.

Cindy Suh said, “REMTI is  assisting countries conduct  preparatory work needed to deploy grid-tied renewable energy.  We provide analytical and advisory services, facilitate knowledge sharing as well as provide training to facilitate access to financing.”  REMTI works in partnership with a number of multilateral initiatives and facilities such as the Climate Investment Funds, the Global Environment Facility, and the Carbon Partnership Facility to diversify power supply.

Providing support through its four key pillars, in particular, pillar 1 (Country Market Transformation Strategies) and pillar 2(Technology roadmaps), REMTI is beginning to make major footprints across the globe. Through pillar 1, the program is supporting countries such as Mexico, Philippines, India, China, Bulgaria, Colombia, Iran and Belarus to develop national renewable energy country strategies and specific policy instruments to support the right enabling environment for renewable energydevelopment. The pillar 2 - Technology roadmaps has so far allowed countries and regions that possess comparative advantage in particular renewable energy sources to benefit from REMTI’s technology specific analytical work, among these are India and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region with CSP, Egypt, Colombia and Mexico with Wind, and Peru, Nepal and Bosnia for small-hydro.

According to the Former Energy Minister Vince Perez “The Philippines is leading the way to green growth, and we plan to double our renewable energy capacity within the next 20 years.  Our main objective is to be the number one geothermal power producer in the world, and largest wind power producer in Southeast Asia.”  Perez said the Philippines is relying on REMTI’s support to develop a comprehensive policy implementation framework, as well as build capacity and provide technical support to the Philippines’ Energy Regulation Commission  and National Renewable Energy Board.

In conclusion, ESMAP’s Renewable Energy Market Transformation Initiative will continue to work with an array of multilateral initiatives and facilities to extend its analytical and advisory services to both low-and-middle-income countries.  ESMAP’s intervention aims to help countries diversify their energy supply mix and scale up the deployment of renewable energy technologies for poverty reduction and economic growth.
