Highlights: ESMAPâs Gender and Energy Development Strategies Program (GEDS)

A think tank session on energy access, gender and climate change just concluded in Washington DC, with external experts identifying potential funding entry points for scaling up energy access. Nearly 1.6 billion people still lack access to networked electricity and about 2.5 billion continue to use traditional biomass fuels for cooking and heating, mostly in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

ESMAP’s Gender and Energy Development Strategies Program the World Bank convened over 70 people plus external experts on Gender, Energy and Climate Change to discuss evident challenges to energy access. The session focused on the global economic recession, investment options, and the impact of climate variability to economic development.

Other Significant Outputs:

Under the Africa Renewable Energy Access Program (AFREA) the Gender and Energy component concept note is being finalized for discussion and review.
In partnership with the World Bank, the team is developing an Issues Paper on Gender and Energy as a Background Paper for the World Bank Group’s 2011 Energy Strategy.
A Project Concept Note has been developed for a Gender and Energy Development program to assist South Asia’s electrification efforts.
