Progress towards ensuring access to modern cooking solutions, a key component to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7), has been slow and disappointing. Today, 2.8 billion people globally still cook with traditional polluting fuels and technologies with severe impacts on health, gender, economic, environmental, and climate outcomes. A continued lack of access to modern cooking solutions not only jeopardizes the achievement of SDG 7, but also inhibits progress towards related SDGs.
Solutions to tackle this pressing development challenge must prioritize user preferences and local cooking contexts to address longstanding barriers to the adoption of modern cooking solutions.
The event launched the new State of Access to Modern Energy Cooking Services report developed by the World Bank’s ESMAP, in close collaboration with Loughborough University and the Clean Cooking Alliance, to provide an in-depth, comprehensive understanding of families’ cooking-energy needs to inform these critical solutions and recommend pathways to accelerate access to modern cooking.
