The government of Ethiopia with the support of the World Bank’s Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) and the UK Department for International Development (DFID), welcomed over 150 participants at the National Off-grid Electrification Forum in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The forum aimed to combine global experiences with mini-grids and solar off-grid with lessons learned from Ethiopia to provide input into the design of the Government of Ethiopia’s Investment program to implement the National Electrification Program (NEP) towards attaining universal electricity access by 2025.

Mini-grid Action Learning Event

This event is part of a series developed to promote investments in the sector and to facilitate the deployment of mini-grid technologies.  The event covers topics such as business models, regulatory framework, the socio-economic benefits of productive uses of electricity and community engagement in Ethiopia, and the opportunities created by unlocking access to semi-commercial financing in the mini-grid and off-grid markets.  Participants also learned about the potential of the investment program currently prepared by the World Bank in support of the NEP, dedicated exclusively to enhancing mini-grid and off-grid access in Ethiopia.

Participants also had the opportunity to receive hands-on training in HOMER and ODYSSEY, in a classroom setting with one-on-one instruction.
