An ESMAP-supported program is working with governments in six African countries to incorporate gender issues into energy sector development. Currently active in Senegal, Mali, Benin, Tanzania, Kenya, and Zambia, the AFREA Gender and Energy program is helping to identify ways to improve women’s access to energy services. As part of this work, capacity building activities are helping to create new opportunities for women entrepreneurs. A video tells the story of one such entrepreneur.

Through the Ulaanbaatar Efficient Heating Project supported by the Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP), the World Bank has helped the government identify a combination of investment measures and recommendations for institutional and regulatory reforms to improve efficiency and the financial and environmental sustainability of the heating sector to put it on a more sustainable path.

As part of the push for universal access to electricity, the World Bank is making a concerted effort to support the most cost-effective systems and technologies to provide electricity to those most in need.  A new tool promises to make electrification planning cheaper and faster by predicting the locations of existing infrastructure and connections.
