OBJECTIVE
This first Agriculture GP -ESMAP (Energy GP) Roundtable on cold storage served several objectives:
- Bring together WB task teams who have incorporated/are incorporating energy-efficient and climate friendly cold storage technologies into WB operations to share their experiences and highlight challenges and opportunities faced during preparation and implementation.
- Showcase examples of emerging technologies as well as business and financing models.
- Provide the opportunity for broader discussions to share experiences and resources available to support financing, operation and maintenance, training/capacity building, impact assessment approaches, and how to increase uptake among farmers.
- Serve as a platform to discuss how the World Bank can promote the adoption of energy-efficient and climate friendly cold storage technologies that can provide sustainable economic benefits to farmers and the economy.
- Introduce ESMAP’s Efficient, Clean Cooling program and work/resources specifically targeted at efficient, clean cooling in the agriculture sector including current engagements
- Gauge interest to continue discussions/organize relevant knowledge events.
BACKGROUND
Energy-efficient and climate friendly cold storage technologies have the potential to transform the agri-food system (for e.g., horticulture, dairy, livestock, fisheries etc), and some World Bank-financed operations – many with ESMAP support - have been supporting the counterparts to mainstream these technologies to reduce food loss as well as enhance food security and economic productivity. In addition, increasing access to efficient and climate-friendly cold chains can help meet climate change goals – in terms of strengthening adaptation through resilience as well as mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.
AGENDA
- Introduction by the chairs.
- Brief overview of main cold chain storage technical solutions by Leo Blyth.
- Panel Discussion by TTLs: Experience and Insights from (completed and ongoing) ESMAP-funded technical assistance supporting energy-efficient cold storage in WB projects (in Bangladesh, India, Mexico, Guatemala, Argentina, and Rwanda).
- Q&A and general discussion.
